If you had been closely following the news last week, you would have realized that Google released its own UPI enabled digital payments app in India aiming at people who are already making use of digital payments. Though there are many such apps already available on the Play Store, this one quite makes a difference.
The Google Tez app acts as a medium of transaction between the sender and the receiver. It doesn’t work exactly like a digital wallet but rather functions like other UPI apps. One interesting feature of the Tez app is that, you can send money without the details of the recipient using the ‘Cash Mode’. If you don’t have access to the other person’s ID or phone number, you can scan their QR code to make transactions. It is really useful in places which have QR codes enabled for accepting payments. Google Tez can be downloaded from Google’s Play Store or Apple’s iTunes depending on your smart phone.
Setting up the Mobile App
The app is also lightweight and offers users an intuitive interface making it easy for anyone to easily make payments digitally. The app is also available for use in a number of local languages apart from English. The available languages right now are – Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Marathi, Tamil and Telugu. Once you have selected your language, it requests for a few permissions and then gets connected to your Google account. It should also be noted that it is mandatory to have a Google account for Tez to work.
Once you have entered your mobile number (it should be connected with your bank account) you will receive a OTP for verification. After verifying your account, you can choose to protect access to your Google Tez application with a Google PIN or your current screen lock method so that it’s safe even if you lost your phone or it is in wrong hands.
Now that you are ready to connect your bank account with Tez, a list of banks are displayed on the screen and you can choose your bank from that to launch the UPI authorization interface. If you haven’t enabled UPI on your account yet, you needn’t worry. Google Tez will guide you to get it enabled on your account. If you have already enabled UPI on your account, then it is all just a piece of cake. Just follow the on-screen instructions and you’re all set. If you’re not able to add your account despite having everything in the proper place, give it a couple more shots. That solved the issue for many people.
Sending & Receiving Payments
Google Tez app’s home screen is pretty basic and is free of any clutter. To be honest, making payments with the Tez app is very easy compared to other similar services. Using the Google Tez app, you can also view other Tez users from your phonebook and also add recipients using their bank account number and IFSC code to transfer or send money via a UPI ID, QR code or a phone number. Once the contact has been created, you can click on them to send or receive payments and view transaction history.
Using the ‘Cash Mode’ you can send payments to anyone near you without sharing phone numbers. For this, Google makes use of the Audio QR (AQR) technology to scan for recipient devices near you. To lure more people into using their app, Google is offering a lot of incentives in the form of rewards and offers. You can earn rewards as and when you make transactions and regarding offers, currently there are three offers available expiring on April 1, 2018. The rewards are offered in the form of money, which is then credited back to your bank account. Inviting new users to Google Tez will earn you Rs. 51 per person and making payments will earn you bonus money from Google Tez scratch cards. Using these scratch cards you can earn up to Rs.1000 per week and the total amount you can make from these rewards is capped at Rs.9000 per financial year. There is also a special ‘Lucky Sundays’ scratch card from which you can earn up to Rs. 1 lakh.
Though there were some problems initially, Google Tez is definitely promising for the Indian economy and it surely makes things interesting with its ultra cool rewards and offers. So what are you waiting for?
