Atomberg Intellon Water Purifier: My Honest 1-Year Review

I live in Chennai, a notably hot and humid city famous for its notoriously hard water. The water here is so hard that it literally leaves stubborn white stains on all bathroom fittings, walls, and buckets. Beyond the aesthetic damage, it also causes significant hair fall. Because of these issues, most residents avoid using the municipal or well water for drinking. If you try boiling it, a substantial amount of mineral residue precipitates and forms a thick crust on the bottom of the utensils. That is precisely why the majority of households have made the switch to those ubiquitous 20-liter bottled RO drinking water cans.

For almost 18 years, I was one among them, relying entirely on these generic water cans. At the time, I didn’t know much about the underlying science or the exact purification processes involved before this water was bottled and delivered to my home. Only recently did I come across the actual mechanics of reverse osmosis (RO). I was genuinely shocked to learn that standard RO purification completely strips away all the essential minerals and salts from the water. What’s even scarier and while I’m not entirely sure of the exact medical consensus, I have read widespread claims about this is that constantly consuming plain RO water not only fails to contribute vital electrolytes for our well-being but can actually leach existing minerals from our bodies. There were even claims suggesting that long-term consumption could gradually weaken our bones.

The Bottled Water Trap and Delivery Nightmares

Determined to make a healthier choice, I made the jump to branded Bisleri 20-liter cans, ordering them directly through their official app. Even though Bisleri charges a premium for their water, the local deliveries weren’t managed directly by the company. Instead, the final mile was outsourced to local water delivery agencies who were incredibly unreliable. Most of the time, the cans were delivered exceedingly late, and only after repeated follow-up calls. Sometimes, they wouldn’t even pick up the phone.

During the peak summer months, the situation worsened drastically. They stopped delivering altogether for over a week. When I finally managed to get a hold of someone, they simply claimed they hadn’t received new stock. Instead of proactively informing customers or at least providing a courteous update when we called to check they completely ghosted us. Dealing with them became an absolute pain. I eventually did some mental math, weighed the constant frustration, and convinced myself that installing a dedicated home water purifier was the only way to avoid this ongoing hassle.

Taking a Bet on the Atomberg Intellon

Right around that time, in June 2025, Atomberg announced the Intellon, marking their first entry into the water purifier space. I had already seen plenty of positive reviews for their BLDC fans and mixer grinders on X (formerly Twitter), so I assumed their new appliance would maintain that same standard of quality.

I was well aware that many established water purifier companies rely heavily on selling lucrative Annual Maintenance Contracts (AMCs) to generate the bulk of their profits. They often price the actual purifier competitively but make up for it through the planned obsolescence of their filters and proprietary replacement parts. I strongly disliked this predatory business model from legacy brands. Thankfully, Atomberg’s primary selling point directly addressed this exact frustration: they explicitly did not have an AMC to sell!

I closely followed the online chatter around the Intellon launch on X and even interacted directly with Arindam Paul, their marketing head, to get a few of my technical doubts clarified. Usually, I am the kind of buyer who meticulously reads through most product reviews before making any purchase. If a product has very few or no reviews, I simply don’t add it to my shortlist. However, I took a leap of faith with the Intellon. Even though it was an entirely new product category from a brand primarily known for fans and motors, I trusted their engineering. They aren’t like other brands that merely import white-labeled products from China, slap a localized logo on them, and market them aggressively until they succeed. Atomberg has a track record of genuine innovation.

Convinced, I purchased the product right in its launch month for ₹16,548, utilizing an Amazon promotional offer alongside a credit card discount. The product was promptly delivered and installed flawlessly within just two to three days.

Real-World Performance and Customer Support

I have been using the Intellon for over a year now, and I genuinely don’t have any regrets. The only minor hardware issue I faced occurred when the primary tap started dispensing water at a slant toward the dispenser body. This made it quite difficult to neatly collect water in a narrow bottle, as the flow wasn’t dropping in a straight vertical line.

I raised a support complaint over WhatsApp, which seems to be their primary official support channel. While I was initially surprised and slightly skeptical that such a popular, growing company didn’t prominently list a traditional phone number or support email address, I received a callback from their service partner almost immediately.

The technician promptly inquired about the exact issue and asked for a suitable time to visit. Since I was at the office when I logged the ticket, I asked him to schedule the visit for the following day. He mentioned that Atomberg’s strict internal policy mandates that all customer complaints be addressed within 24 hours, and he was visibly hesitant to delay the visit. Because the timing constraint was entirely on my end, I had to convince him that it was perfectly fine if the ticket wasn’t closed out immediately. He arrived the next day at our agreed-upon time, assessed the situation, and completely replaced the tap unit, as the slanted flow couldn’t be permanently fixed any other way.

The App Glitch and Filter Replacement

Although this is the first time I have personally owned a water purifier, I’ve observed them at various friends’ homes and know that the pre-filters frequently get dirty and require routine cleaning or replacement. Because my home uses a mix of local well water and government-supplied piped water which is unfortunately often contaminated with sewage I casually asked the technician to check the health of my sediment filter while he was there.

I specifically asked him to inspect just the physical sediment filter, rather than the internal core filters, because the health metrics for all the internal components can be conveniently monitored right from the Atomberg app on my phone. At the time of his visit, after exactly one year of daily use, the app indicated the filters were sitting at around 70% health.

As I suspected given the Chennai water quality, the physical filter looked heavily fouled, completely contradicting the optimistic 70% health reading on the app. After he cleaned it, reinstalled it, and ran the system’s internal diagnostics, the health percentage predictably plummeted. Since the unit was still well under its comprehensive warranty, he replaced the filter on the spot.

However, the software experience post-replacement was a bit rocky. Even after he ran the system diagnostics multiple times, the filter health metric refused to update to 100%. I think he eventually performed a manual override to force the percentage update in the app. To my dismay, this workaround inadvertently reset the health metrics for every single component inside the purifier back to 100%. I strongly suspect this was a software bug or a flaw in the manual override process. Because of this glitch, I will no longer be able to accurately track the real-time degradation of the remaining original filters. Still, I consider this a minor setback. I have eight more months of comprehensive warranty remaining; if any internal filter prematurely fails before then, I can get it replaced at no cost, though I obviously wish the app had just worked correctly in the first place.

Final Verdict: A Must-Have for Indian Homes

Overall, I am highly impressed with this purifier. I primarily run it on their signature “Taste Tune” mode, keeping the mineral setting in the range of 50 to 100. At this specific configuration, the output tastes almost identical to premium Bisleri water, completely avoiding the flat taste of heavily stripped RO water. It intelligently manages the dissolved salts and minerals, unlike traditional water purifiers that exclusively force everything through a harsh RO membrane. Impressively, if the incoming water’s TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) is low enough that RO isn’t strictly necessary, the purifier’s smart sensors bypass the RO process entirely, activating it only when absolutely required to save water and preserve natural minerals.

I also really appreciate their “Vacay Mode.” I have utilized it a few times when I had to travel out of station for over a week. When I returned home and switched the machine back to Taste Tune mode, the dispensed water tasted completely fresh, with none of the stagnant, stale odors you normally get from sitting water. According to Atomberg, the system automatically flushes and cleans the internal filters periodically while Vacay Mode is active although you need to manually empty it when you first turn on this mode.

Beyond these features, here is a quick summary of the main reasons I highly recommend the Atomberg Intellon Water Purifier:

  • Smart Purification: The intelligent system doesn’t rely completely on RO, preventing the unnecessary removal of essential natural salts from your drinking water.
  • No Hidden Costs: There is absolutely no need to purchase an expensive AMC. True to their word, Atomberg doesn’t even offer one.
  • Transparent Pricing: Replacement parts have fixed, highly transparent prices readily available directly on their official website.
  • Generous Coverage: It comes with a standard two-year comprehensive warranty right out of the box, offering great peace of mind.
  • Smart App Integration: The companion Atomberg app provides an excellent interface to easily change filtration modes, monitor component health, and run system diagnostics remotely.

My only real criticism is the software bug that reset the health status of all internal parts back to 100% after a single sediment filter replacement. Other than that minor software quirk, I genuinely think this intelligently designed purifier is a must-have appliance for our modern homes.
