If you are new to blogging, most of you would have been confused about whether to choose WordPress or Blogger. If you had chosen WordPress, you might have wondered whether to go with WordPress.com (hosted version) or WordPress.org (self-hosted version), what’s different between them, which one is better, etc.
In this article, I will be sharing my views on why WordPress.com is definitely better than other blogging platforms like Wix, Weebly, or Blogger for new bloggers and what are the advantages of blogging on WordPress.com.
What is WordPress
WordPress is a publishing platform that makes it easy for anyone to publish online, and proudly powers millions of websites. It comes in two flavors: the fully hosted WordPress.com, and the self-hosted version, whose software is available for free at WordPress.org.
Advantages of blogging on WordPress.com
With WordPress.com, you can get started with writing right away. You can do most of the customizing within an hour. But if you choose to go with self-hosted WordPress, you will have to spend at least a couple of days (or even a week) setting up your website. You need to buy a domain name, choose a good web hosting service, install WordPress, and configure themes and plugins before you can start writing.
WordPress.com, on the other hand, makes it simpler for you by removing the options that you don’t need if you just want to write.
Unlimited page views
You won’t need a separate web hosting plan with WordPress.com because your site will be hosted on their state-of-the-art servers powering millions of other WordPress sites. Also, your site won’t get hammered down when there’s a sudden surge in traffic to your site (just in case one of your posts goes viral on Reddit).
Also, you need not break your head trying to secure your WordPress site by installing and configuring numerous security plugins and Web Application Firewalls (WAF). All these have already been taken care of for you. So, you needn’t worry about getting your WordPress site hacked.
Custom domain name
You can even add a custom domain name to your site with paid WordPress.com plans. You can either buy a new domain name from there or use a domain name you already own. All plans come with free credit using which you can register a domain name for free (first year only). Moreover, you can register as many additional domain names as you want for the same site. But you will have to pay for additional registrations separately.
Also, you can choose from a wide variety of professional themes and preview them effortlessly on your site before activating it. Have a look at the collection of WordPress.com Themes. In case you want to upload a custom theme on your site, you can easily do so by upgrading to their Personal, Premium, or Business plans.
NOTE: You cannot upload custom themes on WordPress.com unless you’re on at least the Business plan.
Social media and email marketing integration
You can also easily integrate your site with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and other social networking sites using their Publicize feature to automatically share your articles on these sites whenever you publish new content.
Also, you can make use of their out-of-box email marketing integration with MailChimp to create an email list and grow your subscribers effortlessly.
Moreover, it has got powerful out-of-the-box features like site stats, social login for comments, polls, contact forms, anti-spam, related posts, infinite scroll, email subscriptions, etc.
Search Engine Optimization
All sites hosted on WordPress.com using themes available on their platform are already optimized for search engines. They’re coded with the highest code quality standards making sure the search engine bots get what they want when they crawl your website. Also, every time you publish a new article or update an old one on your website, all major search engines are notified.
This makes sure that all your latest updates are made available to search engines as soon as possible.
Here’s a list of plugins that comes with all sites hosted on WordPress.com by default.
NOTE: You cannot install additional plugins on WordPress.com Personal & Premium Plans. But you are free to install custom plugins on the Business and eCommerce plans.
In case you run into any problems with your blog or website, you can contact their support team if you’re on a paid plan or get help from the WordPress.com Support Forum if you’re on the free plan. Their support forums are active most of the time as people from different time zones work in shifts to answer customer queries. Also, there are other users who like helping people out there.
All your themes and plugins along with WordPress will be updated to the latest version automatically. So, you needn’t worry about installing updates or fixing updates gone bad.
At WordPress.com, you don’t have to do all the heavy lifting that you’d usually have to do when you self-host your website. That is one of the biggest advantages of blogging on WordPress.com. Instead, you can just focus on creating what you had always loved without any worry or stress.
Publishing content on your blog or website with WordPress.com is always free. But if you feel like you need more space for growing with additional customization and powerful features, you can easily upgrade to a better plan without losing any data.
